Coronavirus: “It’s an excuse for racism”

Updated: Mar 26, 2020

University students share their opinions on the coronavirus frenzy as the first case is confirmed in Kingston Upon Thames.

"It's an excuse for racism," said one student, Iqra. The connection between racism and the coronavirus has been recognised by social media users, particularly after a student from Singapore was attacked in London two weeks ago because of the illness.

Iqra continued to say: "People that I’m not friends with anymore, I’ve seen their snapchat stories of them going up to Asians and removing their masks."

Despite the racial outcome, the virus itself is dominating both national and local headlines as 373 cases across the UK have tested positive.

Another student, Aisej said: "It’s a virus but I feel like everyone’s overreacting, especially in the media, it’s been made to be more than it is."

Some students appeared not worried by the virus that has killed six elderly people with underlying health conditions.

"I'm not scared, the media has exaggerated what it really is. It's basically the flu. It hasn't killed any people our age," said one student, Rebecca.

However, there is some concern for the illness from certain individuals with ongoing health issues. Some students have been seen wearing surgical masks and the university has put up advice posters across all campuses.

“I’m worried about the coronavirus because I have a weak immune system," said Iqra.

Overall, most students at the university suggested that they have little fear of the rapidly growing virus.
