Student Union Elections 2020

Updated: Mar 17, 2020

Eighteen-year-old Leen Salah is hoping to help students solve problems involving the uncertainty around Brexit, unsatisfying courses and improving student’s experiences with the university.

Salah is one of the candidates running for Student Trustee in the ongoing Student Union election, and she wants to use her experience as Campus Representative to help students get more out of their university experience.

“Through my experience as Campus Representative I’ve met a lot of students and there are a lot of issues that I would like to look further into and help them with.” Salah said. “Becoming a Student Trustee would open more opportunities for me to solve these problems and be able to help students in different ways.”

The Student Union election, which decides who gets to represent KU students in the Student Union next year, is taking place Tuesday to Friday, and the candidates have been using this week to promote their plans for the Union next year.

The election decides who becomes next year’s Student Union President, Activities & Development Officer, Education Officer, Welfare Officer and Student’s Trustees, and Salah encourages students to vote for the candidates they feel are right for the different positions.

“It’s their chance to feel involved and make sure that what they are expecting from the university and their experience throughout being a student is actually achieved,” Salah said. “It allows the students to have a voice and feel recognised within the Union specifically.”

A lot of students are not planning on voting in the election, either because they were unaware of the election taking place, or because they feel like it won’t make a difference.

However, there are some students who chose to get involved in the election, and who believe that voting is very important.

“I think it’s important that students have some say in who is there to represent them, whether or not they have much interaction with them,” Hannah Harrison said. “I do think it’s important that people have a say, because some people may align with different opinions and what people stand for.”
